MWN: Porque decidiste tocar music?/ Why did you decided to play music?
Sol Pereyra: Pues yo creo que por que siempre fui muy ansiosa e inquieta. Entonces hubo un momento en el que descubrí que tenía enamoramiento con varios instrumentos. Cuando algo me gustaba iba desesperada, juntaba dinero de donde fuera, y me lo compraba. Vivía un “intenso romance” hasta que me enamoraba del siguiente instrumento y después de otro y de otro. Pero con los que más facinación tuve, fue con la trompeta y la guitarra. Son los que más toco y los que ocupo para componer.
Sol Pereyra (English): I think that it was because I was always very anxious and could not stay still. So there was a moment that I discovered I loved various instruments. When I liked something I would desperately save money from wherever, and I would buy it. I lived an “intense romance” untill I would fall in love with the next instrument, and the next, and so on. I had an affection with the trumpet and guitar. It is the instruments I use to compose songs.
MWN: Como empezaste con la guitarra?/ How did you start playing guitar? Sol Pereyra: Mi mamá me compro una guitarra española, y me llevo a un taller que era en realidad para adultos, no me querían dejar entrar por que era muy chiquita pero mi mamá los convenció de que me hicieran una prueba y al final me dejaron entrar. Ahí aprendí mucho, sobretodo de “Folklore Argentino.”
Sol Pereyra (English): My mom bought me a spanish guitar, and she took me to classes that were actually for adults. They did not want to let me in because I was so young, but my mom convinced them to audition me, and that they would let me in. There I learned a lot, but specially “Folklore Argentino.”
MWN: Porque te apasiona la música y como empezaste como artista?/ What makes you passionate about music and how did you start as a performer?
Sol Pereyra: La verdad es que la música y el teatro siempre estuvieron ahí. Cuando terminé la escuela empecé a estudiar licenciatura en teatro en la Universidad. Tenía un grupo de teatro independiente con el cual trabajábamos mucho con la música como parte de nuestro entrenamiento actoral, tomábamos clases de percusión y teatro. A los 21 años forme mi primer grupo, se llamaba “Los Cocineros” y hacíamos cumbia, reggae, y bolero. Con esto grupo pensábamos combinar el teatro con la música pero poco a poco se fue convirtiendo en un proyecto netamente musical. Nos empezó a ir muy bien y me di cuenta que eso era lo que me gustaba, estaba como pez en el agua. No se si yo descubrí a la música o si la música me tomó y me llevó para su lugar.
Sol Pereyra (English): To be honest, music and theater have always been there. When I finished school I started studying my major in university which was theater. For training I was in an independent thater group in which we worked with music. We took percussion lessons and theater. At 21 years old I started my first group. It was called ““Los Chochineros” and we played cumbia, reggae, and volero. With this group I wanted to combine theater and music, but little by little it started to become just musical. Things started going really well and I noticed this is what I liked to do. I was like in fish in water. I do not know if I discovered music or if music grabbed me and took me to this place.
MWN: Me puedes decir un poco de tu nuevo álbum? /Can you tell me about your new record?
Sol Pereyra: Creo que la mayoría de las canciones están atravesadas por ciertas cuestiones sociales con las cuales no podía hacer una mirada indiferente. Todo lo que escribía estaba atravesado por una sensación de que “están pasando cosas y algo hay que hacer con esto.” Eso hizo que este disco no sea como el primero en el cual todo estaba más atravesado por la situación amorosa, en el nuevo disco era “ qué hago yo ante estas cosas que están pasando en el mundo?” Empecé a escribir muchas canciones que tenían relación a esto actual, a lo que me duele, a lo que esta pasando. Es una invitación a que lo que duele no te tire para abajo sino te active más. Las canciones tienen un poco eso, tanto en las letras como en la música. Es una invitación a luchar como cada uno pueda.
Sol Pereyra (English): Well, I think that the majority of the songs took hold of me with certain things that were happening socially in which I could not ignore them. Everything I wrote went along with a sensation of “things are happening and something must be done with this.” Therefore it is not a CD like the first one in which everything went along with situations that involved love. This was more like “what can I do as an individual with this happening in the world?” I started writing a lot of songs that had a relation to these problems that were happening and hurting me. They are also kind of an invitation to think about all of that which hurts us in the world and become proactive about it instead of letting it bring us down. were not happening. I started to write songs that would have to do with this situations and events. All of the songs have a little bit of that, whether it be in the lyrics or in the music. It is like an invitation to fight however you can.
MWN: Como compones para tu grabación? How do you go about writing a record?
Sol Pereyra: Voy combinando para no repetirme en una misma formula y poder encontrar una vuelta distinta, más estando en un cuarto disco. Me encanta tener un sello personal, que las personas digan “esto es muy Sol Pereyra.” pero también me gusta encontrar una vueltita e ir creando cosas nuevas. Hay veces que compongo una melodía con la guitarra, otras veces empiezo con la trompeta o a veces, como lo hice en este disco, hago colaboraciones con artistas que me gustan mucho. En este disco compuse canciones con Silvano Zetina, productor del disco y co-compositor de algunas rolas conmigo. Esto me ayudó para salir de lugares comunes y abrirme a otros lados musicalmente.
Sol Pereyra (English): I like to mix it up a bit, just so that I don’t fall into this repetitive pattern and risk repeating myself. Specially since this is my fourth album. I like to have a personal attachment to music- where people go “that’s very Sol Peryra.” At the same time I love to create new things, and sounds. So, sometimes I compose a melody using the guitar, and other times I start with the trumpet. Sometimes like I did with this album I collaborate with artist that I like a lot. In this I album I collaborated with Silvano as director and composer. This helped open new doors musically.
MWN: How was the creative process for this album in particular?/ For this specific album how was the creative process?
Sol Pereyra: Fue diferente por que en “Tírame Agua” yo me encerré un mes y me propuse hacer una canción al día, al final del mes acabé con 30 canciones y con tendinitis en el brazo por haber hecho la locura de haber estado 13 a 14 horas grabando diario. En cambio con “Préndete” llegue a la misma cantidad de canciones pero algunas cosas maduraron en mi cabeza y logré encararlo de una forma distinta. Iba componiendo con más tiempo o con otros músicos amigos y les mandaba propuestas. El proceso fue un poco mas relajado. También seleccionamos la canciones que nos resultaban indispensables para este disco. Tanto Silvano, como productor, y yo, teníamos que estar seguros de que las canciones que entraban al disco nos resultaran indispensables, así como “no puedo vivir si no ponemos esta canción” jajaja y así lo hicimos, si había una mínima duda entonces no la poníamos.
Sol Pereyra (English): It was different because in “Tirame Agua,” I shut myslef for a month and I decided to write one song per day. So at the end of the month I ended up with 30 songs and tendonitis in my arm due to the fact that I spent over 13 to 14 hours in the studio recording. However, this time with “Préndete” I wrote the same amount of songs, but I think my approach to it was a lot more mature. I took my time, and like I said there was the collaboration of other artists The process was a lot more relaxed. Also, the process of selection of the songs was a lot more objective. Both Silvano and I were sure to only include the songs that were really important to the album- kind of like ” I can’t live if this song does not go on the record” and we did well with that. If there was a slightest “what if” the song wouldn’t get put on the record.
MWN: Cuales son tus artistas favoritos?/ Who are your favorite artist?
Sol Pereyra: Me gusta mucho un grupo de reggae de argentina que se llama “Sig Ragga.” Hacen un reggae poco común y me fascinan. Escucho mucho música clásica, esta ahí, sonando permanentemente. Escucho a Muchachito Bombo Infierno, que aparte colaboró en mi canción “La Impositiva.” Con el reggae tengo una facinación particular, escucho mucho reggae de los 70s.
Sol Pereyra (English): I like reggae a lot. Right now I am into this band called “Ragga.” Their reggae vibe is not common, but it fascinates me. I also like classical music a lot. Among other artists that I have been listening to a lot lately are: Muchachito Bombo Infierno, who actually collaborated in the song “La impositiva.” I am fascinated by raggae, and as of now I would have to say I am in love with reggae from the 70’s for sure.
MWN: Con cual músico te gustaría compartir el escenario?/ Which artist would you like to share a stage with?
Sol Pereyra: Con The Clash o Bob Marley, definitivamente jajaja. Con Muchachito me encantaría compartir una gira, lo quiero y lo admiro, con Mano Negra si se volvieran a juntar también me gustaría muchísimo.
Sol Pereyra (English): With The clash, Bob Marley- definitely. With Muchachito he is actully alive and I would like to tour with him. I love him. I admire him. With Mano Negra I also really like him.
MWN: Okay, ultima pregunta! Que cancion te regresa a tu infancia?/ Okay, last questions! Which songs reminds you of your childhood?
