Chicago’s very own Whitney had a three night SOLD OUT Valentines Special at Thalia Hall. Luckily, Music Why Not had the chance to catch day two of the three night run: Valentine’s Day. This a day that emphasizes love. But in the words of frontman Julien Ehrlich “it’s no different than any other day,” because love should be celebrated everyday.
Lyrically, Whitney constructs concrete narratives that evoke feelings of tenderness and reflection. Ehrlich’s voice has a quality of earnestness that is fortified by the bands folksy instrumentals. Passionate fans sung back every word during “Dave’s Song” and continued to do so with every song that followed. Being Valentine’s Day, There was a sea of couples as well as great friends who wanted to share the intimacy created by the aura of Whitney. Typically people at sold out shows are all shoved into the tiny pit, however there were no fights nor shoving, just a unified sway of concert goers basking in the touching imagery Whitney was giving. There is this consistent warmth that continued from song to song.
Whitney performed a couple of new songs as well, and although fans did not know them, they held on to every word coming out of Ehrlich’s croon. During fan favorite “No Woman” one could see some couples sharing a kiss. Although not necessarily a love song per say, closing with “Golden Days”the bands thoughtful tune was the perfect send off.
