Ten-time Grammy Award-winning band Santana, formed by Mexican-Americanguitarist and songwriterCarlos Santana, have come back to perform their North Americandates of their Supernatural Now tour, a celebration of the band’s 1999 release,Supernatural, as well as their 50th anniversary of their explosive performance at the original Woodstockfestival in 1969. With the band’s love for blending a multitude of genres, as well as their love for performing covers and Carlos Santana’s signature guitar playing, you are destined to see greatness for the band’s entire performance and how their music is still relevant today, for people young and old. For support, the band honoured and brought one of the most well-known and multi-genre friendly rock band, The Doobie Brothers.

Coming up to the stage, San Jose, CA-based and 70’s rock favorites three-piece band, The Doobie Brotherscame through to perform a variety of classics for their older fans and bring that same energy and flavour that they’ve had from their previous shows. During the beginning of their set, they performed classics like Rockin’ Down the Highway, Spirit, Ukiah, and Clear as the Driven Snow,as well as performed covers from artists and bands like Kim Weston, Seals & Crofts, and The Art Reynolds Singerswith tracks like Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While), Cotton Mouth, and Jesus Is Just Alright. The band brought their tour members that brought that same sound that they had for their older work, such as the saxophone, fiddle, and acoustic guitars. They brought so much fun and character on stage whenever they performed, and they tend to electrify the stage with their stage lighting and production dynamics.

Despite being a band that toured and made music for over 40 years, the Doobie Brothers still manage to perform well and leads Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmonsbring in very high vocals whenever they perform. The band also performs well in-sync together whenever they hit a different part of the chorus and sound. What I liked about the show was that they infused the strong classic jazz-rock sound and incorporate it with other genres like country, progressive rock, blue-eyed soul, and soft rock. Another interesting part of the show was that the older fan base, which ranged between people in their early to mid-70s enjoying the music and knowing more about the band than anything else. They also were vibing to their solo material and enjoyed the first several tracks of their set. The people standing near the front of the stage had the time of their lives when the band performed. They were standing, dancing, waving their hands, and so forth when they closed their set to an end.

Once the Doobie Brothersfinished their set, someone from Santana’sgroup sprayed the air of the stage with incense to cultivate great energy for the audience and restore positive vibes for the entire show. Before the band came, they showed the introduction video of their iconic Woodstock performance in 1969 and the reaction from both fans who went to the event, and the band, plus with assorted clips from music videos and other tour videos. From then, Carlos Santanacame with the band to perform the first three tracks with that positive energy, such as Soul Sacrifice, a cover of Babatunde Olatunji’s Jin-go-lo-ba, and Evil Ways/A Love Supreme. Carlos Santana performed only with the guitar and strummed away like it was nothing else. The band had a variety of instruments that each member performed that was quite different from other shows, such as the bongos, the tambourine, saxophone and much more. The music that they performed cultivated Carlos’ Latinroots, mixed with his progressive psychedelic rock style and use of guitar solos to mix the rifts. The band performed a variety of covers from artists and bands like Tito PuenteSkank, and The Chambers Brothers, with tracks like Oye como va,Saideira,Are You Ready, and Love, Peace and Happiness

What was amazing about their set is that Carlosperformed lots of guitar solos and brought this unique energy whenever he strummed the guitar. He developed a variety of emotions through the strum of each note and how it affects the audience, one way or another. The stage lighting and production of the stage was very top-notch and was unique with how it was played out. In Put Your Lights On, everyone brought their phones and lit up the place with their flashlight and waved it all around to show the significance of the track, and show their solidarity and love for those significantly affected by the song.

In the middle of their set, Carlostalked about the significance of Africanculture and how it plays a major role in contemporary music and dance, as well as congratulating the Doobie Brothers on performing and the Toronto Raptors for winning the championship. He then followed up with a guitar solo medley, followed by a song. Every member of the band brought a unique style for what they did on each song and its solo. People were also dancing to the rhythm and brought great energy whenever they performed, such as how they danced, it just gave that vibrant taste and energy for each song. Overall, it was a great performance from what I noticed and this was a remarkable event for me to capture since I never would have thought that consistency and dedication for over 40 years in music would be remembered on, young and old. Santana will continue the Supernatural Nowtour on until August 25th, 2019 in Wantagh, New York at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater.
