Lewis Capaldi, better known as America’s Sweetheart graciously brought his tour to Chicago’s Thalia Hall. Before opening with “Grace”, Lewis’s voice could be heard from backstage thanking the crowd for choosing to see him and to be prepared for a night they would not forget. One of the things that makes Lewis Capaldi a class act is how he is so genuine and engaging on stage.
He poked fun at crowd members and made jokes about their expectations towards him. I think my favourite quotes of the night was definitely “for those of you who like rock n roll, this next song is going to be disappointing.” Then the opening of Don’t Get Me Wrong began to play. He’s utterly himself and clearly enjoys being a showman. It’s wonderful how he can go from comedic to heartbreaking in less than a second. His vocals are exceptional. He has so much soul and depth.
As he sang “One,” the control he had over his voice was remarkable. At one point he took the time to read out the posters. His favourite one in particular was “I love you America’s Sweetheart.” His response was “as many of you know, I am on a quest to become America’s next Sweetheart.”
It’s clear that lewis has an international fan base as well. There were a few Scottish fans within the crowd that were shouting jokes to Lewis. He was clearly enjoying himself. At one point a fan was facetiming their sister and lewis took the phone and greeted the fan. After that he sang the titular track of his latest ep Bruises. It was lovely to see fans sing every word back to him, and at times louder.
Moments before he closed the show with “Someone You Loved,” fans threw a patriotic speedo at Lewis. Shamelessly, he put it on over his pants and said “ I take this America’s Sweetheart shit seriously!” It was hilarious. As he sang, he would let the crowd do the chorus by themselves. The chorus was sung 4 extra times but fans still wanted him to keep singing. He’s marvelous. Lewis is a star in the making and his career is taking off.
