Seattle, WA rapper and singer Ryan Caraveo recently dropped a unique record entitled Butterfly Boy and it has been buzzing so far with his dark melodic vocals and intricate rap verses. Being that it was his first time in Toronto, fans from all over Ontario have anticipated on listening to him and seeing him live since 2017. I spoke with some fans and they have mentioned that they were listening to him since 2017. The fans have also said that his style was similar to artists like Witt Lowry and blackbear. He is also well-known for touring and being on the road with acts like Cam Meekins and Adrian Stresow. From that, he has cultivated a unique fanbase and has experimented with unique sounds that relate to his dark-sounding energy. The singer took his show to Toronto’s own Velvet Underground and brought along an artist that I have been familiar with, which was Khary. I had the pleasure of listening to Khary last year after seeing him open up for Miami, FL-rapper Sylvan LaCue, and his unique rap tracks with his unorthodox personality are very enticing.
Starting off the show was the only rapper with the unorthodox style, Khary. He started with a unique set of songs that are more pop-rap based and has a unique energy that he presents for his sets. He also distributes a unique flow that kind of matches his style and demeanor. He did a lot of things that contributed to his strong stage presence and crowd participation such as jumping off stage, rapping along with the fans, having a set phrase that he wants the fans to say, and saying some unique remarks on song cues. His rap style is very unique in which he does a variety of comedic rap, alternative rap, pop-rap, and melodic R&B. His rapping ability and style compared to other artists is unmatchable and he makes the beat worthwhile with his rapid flow and great lyrics. During his last tour, he would have a hype man on stage with him; now he only had his DJ with him but with his performance, it was a worthwhile performance that cannot be matched. The fans sang his songs and enjoyed his performance as an opener. Overall, he is versatile with both singing and rapping and has a unique style towards it. Most of his song subjects are based on love and relationships, getting lucky, being different than his other counterparts, his life and the lifestyles that come with it.
After Khary’s set finished, Ryan Caraveo started with a unique sound system that played a pre-intro of getting him, representing the Butterfly Boy album and its brand. The lighting was at pitch white and did the half sequence for light distribution. Then the drummer and guitarist arrived, and Ryan kicked it off with tracks like Run, Deceived, Murder, Grim Reaper, Sick, and Thrivin. He managed to rely on lighting for his entire show to demonstrate his dark-based production and aesthetic while having more an indie aesthetic vibe. His rapping and singing ability matched up to what fans expected and it made the fans much more excited for him and proud of what he has accomplished.
He put on one heck of a show, and he has a quirky and fun stage presence whenever he performs. He managed to stay on beat and keep the flow of the show going. The fans were singing along to each track and were participating like no other show before. His bleached grey hair is what sets his unique style whenever he comes out and the fans can recognize it easily. He performs quite well and manages to never break a sweat. Overall, his show has been amazing so far. Ryan Caraveowill continue on his tour until December 13th, 2019 at the Showbox in Seattle, Washington. You can find out more at http://www.ryancaraveo.com/
