Badflower kicked off 2020 with a sold out show at The Masquerade on the Heaven stage in Atlanta on January 26th. They brought back the show that they toured in the fall for four more dates in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida with one of their favorite bands, Dead Sara. I had already seen this show twice so I knew what to expect, but the crowd didn’t and was intrigued by the humorous intro audio and visual bit that played before Badflower took the stage.
The audience kept their excitement rolling as the band opened with “Wide Eyes”, one of the last songs off their album. Bassist Alex Espiritu kept the energy high with lots of crowd interaction and dancing, as he always does. The set went on and the crowd continued to rage before guitarist, Joey Morrow, stopped it between songs to tell someone who had previously been holding a sign up, to put it up again. The sign was asking if he could come on stage and play guitar for a certain song, “Let the Band Play”. Josh Katz, lead singer, joked about how if they ever see someone holding a sign asking to do something then they’ll probably say yes because they want to fans to have as much fun as possible. Afterwards, the man was brought on stage and given Josh’s guitar. He absolutely crushed it and owned the stage like he was part of the band. During Josh’s time away from his guitar, he took it upon himself to crowdsurf and get personal with the crowd.
After this exciting performance, Badflower slipped into a “Champagne Supernova” cover that brought everyone together. Moving on towards the end of the show, Josh told the room that he wanted them to cheer “one more song” after the band went off stage so that he could get a video of himself dancing to their request. It was a bit cheesy, but just cheesy enough. For their encore, Badflower played their most popular songs, of course, which got everyone to stick around until the very end. They finished the night with my personal favorite, “Promise Me”.
After seeing them twice this past fall with Dead Poet Society and one of my favorite bands, Weathers, I knew what their show was going to be like, but they still outdid themselves. Badflower always puts on an a-plus, high energy show that gets everyone on their toes. Their charismatic personalities pull you in and allows for memorable night.
