American Football @ The Opera House – Toronto, ON, Canada – (SUPPORT: Ellis) – NXNE 2019

Urbana, IL-based band and one of the most-well bands in the emo and math rock genre, American Football, are starting off with 2019 with a new album release within a three-year span, which is their third self-titled album. The album features a good amount of female lead vocalists of rock, such as Hayley Williams of Paramore & Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, and it is one of their latest projects that still follows the same traditions of their past projects, especially their debut self-titled album, which was released in 1999. Although they do not start their own tour until June 21st in Salt Lake City, they were officially on the bill as one of the headlining acts in Toronto’s NXNE music festival for this year, and they managed to have a tour in Toronto’s well-known venue, The Opera House.

Before American Football performed, Hamilton, ON-based indie and DIY artist Ellis came on stage with her band to perform much softer, well-spoken tracks off her own projects. She brought a unique sense of charisma within her voice whenever she sings and she incorporates well-distinct, vibrant sounds on her vocals. The band and herself incorporate well together through the band’s loud, raw, hard rock-based sounds with Ellis’ softer vocals. She manages to bring great chemistry with her guitarist when performing, and she also announced to the crowd that she got married yesterday, and it was a wonderful weekend for her, even though her vocals weren’t as loud since she was screaming from her wedding the other day. Although the vocals are well-soft, the delivery and emotion within her voice is much amazing

After Ellis finished her set, American Football came and started their set with a track on their latest project, which was called Silhouettes. One interesting thing about the show was that they used tingling, fluorescent lights to start off their mystique set, and became quiet with the tingling light until the guitarist’s struck their guitar to start off. They also performed tracks like Every Wave to Ever Rise & My Instincts Are the Enemy, and they incorporated a variety of musical instruments to start off the show make it quite unique. Mike Kinsella (lead singer of Owen, Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc), the lead singer of the band started off with quieter, slow songs and went on to fast-tempo, loud songs later on for his set. The guitarist of the band also gave some unique vocals and managed to hold his own, for the night. Some of the best moments of the show were how the band’s emotion all together was on an all-time high, especially with production and stage management, which proved that they really care about their fans. As well, the lighting and stage decorations were fantastic. Finally, Mike’s vocals and lyrical delivery were much set into perfection, with the lyrics are quite groundbreaking, from song to song. For their encore, they played three well-acclaimed tracks from their past projects, including Stay Home, I Can’t Feel You and Never Meant. NXNE will still continue on until June 16th, 2019.
