Angel Olson @ The Palace Theatre – Los Angeles, CA (Support: Vagabon)

Vagabon opened up for Angel Olsen at the Palace Theatre last Thursday night and showcased a number of tracks off of her 2019 self titled album.  The gorgeous theatre in downtown Los Angeles was mostly full for Vagabon’s straight forward but musically poignant set. Her smooth and silky voice punctured through the usual apathy for an opening set and grabbed the audience’s attention from the start.

Laetitia Tamko, Vagabon’s real name, has an innate ability to balance infectious melodies that burrow their way into your conscious with deeply intimate lyrics. This translated well in a live setting with standouts like “Water Me Down” and “Every Woman”.  It was an appropriate and terrific prelude to Angel Olsen’s headlining set.

Angel took the stage about a half hour after Vagabon wrapped up and played a set that covered most of her recently released All Mirrors. The new tracks, much more synth heavy than her previous work, exploded live.  “Lark” absolutely took off with the live string section.  Wrapping up her set, Angel brought Mark Ronson on stage to play bass on their collaboration “True Blue”.  It was a fun and light hearted end to an evening that was heavy on introspection and the dark, brooding feelings you’ll find in Angel’s music. Vagabon and Angel Olsen wrap up their tour together on December 14th and 15th for a two night performance in Denver.
