Music, Why Not!

Austin City Limits 2024: Weekend One, Day Two

Day two of nonstop music from our favorite artists including Something Corporate, Khruangbin, Dua Lipa and more.

One of the first acts to take the Miller Lite stage was I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (IDK HOW for short). IDK HOW serves as the solo project of musician Dallon Weekes, best known for his involvement in Panic! At the Disco and The Brobecks. Fans lined up to catch the singer on stage, which was astonishing to see given how the stage was set up directly in front of the sun. Weekes began with tracks like “SPKOTHDVL,” “Leave Me Alone” and “Do It All the Time,” followed by songs from their sophomore album Gloom Division. The set ended with their well-known song called “Choke” from their debut album Razzmatazz, where fans swayed and sang the lyrics word for word.

Something Corporate starred on the Honda stage as a Weekend One exclusive, as the band is currently on their North American reunion tour. Lead singer Andrew McMahon is known for debuting this band back in 1998, and broke up in 2006 to pursue his other side project titled Jack’s Mannequin. SoCo reunited once again in 2023 to help celebrate their time as a band by performing at When We Were Young fest in Las Vegas. Now, they performed at Austin City Limits to help commemorate some of the band’s best emo hits, such as “I Woke Up in a Car,” “She Paints Me Blue” and “Hurricane.” The set felt the most heartfelt when they performed “Punk Rock Princess,” which truly garnered SoCo their success. They ended their set with “If You C Jordan,” which left SoCo fans wondering when the band would ever return.

On the other side of the park at the American Express stage was lo-fi singer Eyedress, who gained success as a TikTok artist in 2021 (even though he’s been active since 2008). Eyedress and his band recently were in Austin two weeks prior to the festival, as they opened for Glass Animals at the Moody Center for the ‘Tour of Earth.’ Many fans in the crowd recalled the opening set, which influenced them to check out Eyedress at the ACL main stage. The singer performed numerous hits behind cool visuals that instilled GTA IV like graphics. On top of performing songs like “Romantic Lover” and “Still in Love,” the Filipino singer played underrated tracks like “Cocaine Sunday” and “Mulholland Drive.” During the last song of the afternoon, Eyedress brought out his son to sing on stage, making for such a sweet moment and a core memory for everyone in attendance.

Khruangbin… Houston’s very own, took the American Express stage during golden hour. Currently on tour to support their latest album A La Sala, the Houston trio made a memorable stop in Austin (and yes, we’re still salty there is no Houston date… yet). Laura ‘Leezy’ Lee appeared, sporting a beautiful yellow dress with rain suspenders, a large flower crown and her notable wig. There was no stopping the momentum of Khruangbin, as they went straight into performing tracks from their latest album like “Juegos y Nubes,” “Pon Pón” and “Hold Me Up (Thank You).” The trio also performed well-known hits like “People Everywhere” and “María También,” where they all synchronized in dance. The best part was when guitarist Mark Speer made a subtle announcement that Leon Bridges and Will van Horn were joining them on stage, meaning Austin was about to get some Texas Sun action. The crowd was in for a huge surprise as Leon Bridges and Khruangbin performed a staggering rendition of “Mariella” and “Texas Sun” from their highly-acclaimed collaboration EP. Texas Sun in Austin… what more can we ask for?

Ending the night was pop sensation Dua Lipa, who was one of the best parts of the ACL 2024 lineup. Austin City Limits is known for announcing surprise headliners who rarely perform on festival routes (Miley Cyrus in 2021, Paramore in 2022, Alanis Morrissette in 2023, etc.), but Dua Lipa truly took the cake. ACL served as the pop star’s only North American appearance in 2024, and has recently released her third album titled Radical Optimism. The singer had an enormous stage setup and a cat walk, which already made it super immersive. The set started off with “Training Season,” followed by “One Kiss” with an extended outro that bled into “Illusion.” Fans went crazy during “Levitating,” which subsequently ended the first act of her show. She returned to the stage for “These Walls,” followed by “Be the One” and “Love Again.” In the middle of her show, Dua Lipa paused to exclaim her love for Austin, as she got her start after showcasing at South By Southwest in 2016. Lipa performed more hits such as “New Rules” and “Happy for You,” and ended her ACL 2024 appearance with “Don’t Start Now” and “Houdini.” Her set remained mesmerizing throughout, as she had outstanding backup dancers and remained energetic throughout every single song. With that, ACL Day Two came to a close, and it was hard to imagine anyone topping Lipa’s performance.
