Music, Why Not!

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2019 Artists Features: Friday Pilots Club

Could you please introduce yourselves and your role in the band?

Caleb: Hi I’m Caleb, I sing and Drew and I write together.

Drew: I’m Drew, and I play guitar and make a fool of myself on stage.

How did yall meet? And how did the band get started?

Drew: We met at a party way long ago, 3 years ago. We were at the same party and we totally became those guys who were in the corner of the room playing guitar pissing everyone else off and there was an instant connection, from there it kinda snowballed into this.

Yall just released “While you wait” tell me more about that

Drew: So While you Wait was kind of an experiment something we wanted to do for fun. We kind of wanted to go back to the 80’s and look at some songs that were very out of the ordinary not necessarily ones that everyone would know. We did them all ourselves, the 5 of us, the two of us plus 3 backing members erik shawn and and Jimmy. It was something to do and the whole idea of the name While You Wait is that we got a lot of other stuff going on and it’s all gonna happen. New original music coming, it’s basically while you wait for new stuff here are some covers.

Who or what influences your music? What is your creative process like?

Caleb: As a vocalist I love Julian Casablancas from The Strokes, Jeff Buckley, separate reasons but they’re both great. I’d say that those two are my favorite

Drew: I think I find inspiration in a lot of different and random things and anything that sounds different or anything that hasn’t been done before. I love poppy, I think she’s really cool, like it’s very interesting, you listen to any of her songs and you never heard that before. I love the new Bring me the horizon record, Slipknot. I like Metal, pop music and also classical music so anything that’s different.

Is there any part of your musical career that you’re proud of?

Caleb: I think this was a big moment. ACL is huge, Bonaroo this summer was great too. It’s cool to see a collection of people coming together and it makes me feel validated in a wholesome way.

Drew: This is random but my mom got recognized at the grocery store in MIchigan,my home town and someone was like “are you Drews mom” and she texted me about it which is very weird to me because we do this and we’re normal guys. There’s very little special about us besides that we’re in a band, but we’re just the normal and equally weird as everyone else in the planet. The fact that people know who we are is still really strange to me, it’s something that we’re not used to.

Caleb: The trader joes person who checked us out recognized us and I was like woah that’s cool!

Is this your first time at ACL? If so how do you feel.

Drew: We’ve both been to SXSW here played it like two or three years ago, but this is our first time for an official festival like ACL.

Any particular placed you’d like to perform at?

Drew and Caleb: Red Rocks!!
Drew: I want to play The Blind Pig in Ann Arbour it’s my hometown. There’s a video of Kurt Kobain saying it’s one of his favorite places to play. I grew up going to shows there and I have yet to play one there, it would be full circle for me.

Any last words you’d like to say before we finish this interview?

Caleb: Enjoy the new stuff While you wait!

Drew: Be kind to one another and take care of people!.
