On a chilly autumn Thursday evening in Los Angeles, the air inside The Novo was electric with anticipation for Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils.
The group’s sound seems like a more appropriate fit for the sun-soaked afternoons of the west coast as opposed to Brooklyn. Dreamy, surf-inspired soundscapes color most of their songs and the band members all give off likeable, slacker energy.
The setlist traversed the band’s discography, from their early garage rock-infused anthems to their later, more expansive and atmospheric compositions. Each song was greeted with enthusiastic singalongs by a crowd hanging on every word.
Standout moments included the shimmering guitar riffs and soaring harmonies of “What a Pleasure” and the wistful “Careless.” At one point the lights fully dimmed and everyone in the crowd brought out the flashlights on their respective phones. Guitarist Tommy Davidson sat down on the end of the stage and let the light serenade him as he serenaded them with his strumming.
They ended on a new tune, “Tough Love”, before leaving behind a lingering sense of warmth. Their performance at The Novo was a testament to their enduring legacy as one of indie rock’s more reliable acts over the past decade plus.
