The American singer-songwriter Carlie Hanson, who rose to fame after the release of her second single, “Only One” performed at the Theater of Living Arts in Philly, while on tour with indie dream-pop band Bad Suns. She’s only 18 but has the musical soul of a performer that’s been working at their craft for years. When she first came on stage a wave of energy collapsed into the crowd making every single moment electric. Her vocals and on-stage presence were one of the many reason why I would go see her live again.
As soon as the lights dimmed and the first note was sang everyones worries probably vanished into thin air. The sequential performance was expected but not boring. Carlie set the vibe right off the batt by opening her performance with one of her older singles, “Why Did You Lie?” The beat towards the end of the song drove the crowd crazy. The way she mixes fragility and excitement makes her a unique perform with many opportunities to branch out in different directions. She then continued to play tunes like “Us” and “Cigarettes” which in my opinion were major crowd favorites.
Her upcoming E.P titled Junk is set to release in the states on June 7. She gave a teaser of this project by performing the second track off the E.P, “Back in My Arms.” Everyone in the crowd was so hyped during her set and were blown away by her vocal range. She proved her beautiful voice was there to stay during a heartfelt performance of “Toxins.” There were a few tears shed on her end as well as for the crowd.
Overall, her performance was grand. Definitely five stars out of five. If you are seeing Bad Suns make sure to arrive early to catch her set.
