The Moroccan Lounge came alive on Tuesday night for Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul’s electrifying headlining set.
Their performance is on the heels of the Belgian duo’s critically acclaimed debut album Topical Dancer. While that was their debut, it certainly isn’t the first time they’ve worked together, as Bolis produced Chrarlotte’s 2019 Zandoli EP. It did, however, feel like a wonderful step forward in their music together. Topical Dancer is packed with very personal satire and playful jabs on race and class issues within Belgium. It’s all packaged within a groovy, dancy, beautifully produced LP – one I couldn’t wait to see translated to a live performance.
The two hit the stage at 8:15pm – pretty early for a headliner, but you wouldn’t know it by the excitement coming from the audience and the band themselves. Every bit of jubilance that comes forward on the album was multiplied tenfold in a live setting. There was also an endearing gratitude the duo felt when they saw the crowd dancing along and especially when they knew the words. After the reviews Topical Dancer received, I wouldn’t fault the duo for expecting this type of reception (as it’s well deserved), but it’s always fun when an artist is surprised by the love they receive.
Highlights of the set, which included almost every song of their new LP, were the opener “Hey”, the David Byrne referencing “Making Sense Stop”, and the album stunner “It Hit Me”. It’s not hard to see these two moving on the bigger and bigger venues, captivating all their audiences on the way. For now, though, this is a quite a start.
