MWN: What was the writing process of “Questions and Confessions” like—what was the inspiration behind it?
Chris: Had a couple ideas for an EP. Just started writing a lot and realizing the songs were asking the real questions I had; I was getting things off my chest that I would only say in songs—calling it “Questions and Confessions”. I like how I write, and that’s what came out of it all.
MWN: Was there a certain order to writing the songs or did you just write as they came to you?
Chris: I was in a writing season; I just wrote a lot of stuff and I just chose the songs that I felt matched my personality and vibe and what I wanted to present myself.
MWN: If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
Chris: Smino, Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Rex Orange County; those four are on my playlist constantly.
MWN: With that, what are the top played songs on your playlist?
Chris: Well, aside from my stuff to make sure it’s right, “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee was up there for a while—that’s why I put it in my set. “Lucy” by Still Woozy, Smino’s “Wild Irish Roses”, Rex Orange County—I’d have to say his song “Untitled”, ironically.
MWN: What have been some of the best moments on this tour?
Chris: Getting to know them [Scotty Sire, Bruce Wiegner, and other touring bandmates] off camera and on camera and watch how they do things. They’re really dope guys, so getting the experience like opening for Scotty and getting to know them as people. The support that comes with that; this is my first time just working with a microphone and no instrument or band to back me up—it’s just me and the audience and that’s been a really fun learning experience.
MWN: Give me three words to describe how you feel when you go on stage every night.
Chris: Love, Energy, and Emotion. I want to say nervousness, but once you get up there—it’s more of a pre-show thing.
MWN: Any pre-show rituals or anything to shake the nerves?
Chris: Take a shot and hang out with these guys who are constantly putting positive energy out there. And right before I go on I always say to myself “Yo, you love to do this” and that sends me on my way.
MWN: To wrap it up, what’s one thing you want your fans to know? If there was one message you could get out to them, what would that be?
Chris: I’m writing these songs that I want them to hear; none of it is contrived or fake. I’m saying the things that maybe they can’t say; I want to find the people that relate to me. I want them to know that what they’re feeling is normal and some of my stuff is kind of goofy, but I’m giving my natural thoughts and emotions and I want to find the people that feel like “Wow, I’m so glad I found this.” So for the fans, I’m just so happy they can find someone they can relate to.
