Just before the new millennium, a four-piece band called Explosions in the Sky formed in Austin, Texas. Throughout their illustrious career, the post-rock titans have written anthems that boast cinematic, life-affirming climaxes and crescendos. With 7 LPs under the band’s belt, the crowd The Hollywood Palladium on Thursday night was ready for a career-spanning set and that’s exactly what they got.
Opening the evening was a charming Brazilian group called Sessa. Their breezy, delicate style came in stark contrast to the headliners; but their sunny melodies and lovely voices provided a nice deep breath before the heavy, dense rock took over.

After a short break, Explosions took the stage and played a balls-to-the-wall set that covered every stop in their discography. Highlights were the overwhelming “Greet Death” and “The Birth and Death of the Day”. Explosions have always been known for their passionate performances. You can feel the passion coming through their body language just as much as the speakers. After 20 years, you could tell they were just as grateful as the audience.
