Music, Why Not!

Larry June @ The Ritz – Raleigh, NC

To make an on the nose car reference, Larry June is truly in his own lane. I can’t think of any artist in this era who does what he does. One word to explain his sound—vibes. Larry makes music for long evening car rides or the after-work Friday drive ready for the weekend. There’s a certain elegance and regality to his records. He brags but in a way that doesn’t alienate the fans. In fact, he does the opposite—he relates.

The crowd in attendance was a mature crowd, mostly in the 25-35 club. His music strikes a nerve with them. Many were fitted from head to toe in Larry’s merch, Midnight Organic. Those that did not, still fit the aesthetic of laidback streetwear. Monroe Flow opened and worked the crowd with a few songs. Larry came out and wasted no time by immediately going into “Private Valet” the lead song from his album “Spaceships on the Blade”. Usually at a show the crowd is kind of in awe or stunned when the artist comes out. Not this time. Larry’s fans were in lock step with him. The crowd was prepared as it seemed like most of the venue was able to rap along with Larry without missing a word. Larry recognized that well and treated the crowd as an extension of him. As the show went on it felt like him and the crowd were trading bars. Larry, like an encouraging best friend would give one of his signature adlibs, “Good Job”, as the crowd took over.

With Larry, you’re not going to get over the top spectacle and lights or anything up-tempo. He’s mellow, and smooth yet the charisma is there to keep the crowd engaged—like I said it’s pure vibes.
