Music, Why Not!

The Shelters @ HOB Cambridge Room- Dallas

Is rock music still alive? What makes a good rock song? The guitar riffs, the grungy rock and roll voice, the drum patterns? the bass rhythm? Some chord progressions? Some guitar picking pattern? All of the above I would say. A good rock song has the right amount guitar solos, riffs, patterns, strong vocalist, a base and a drum line. Speaking in technical terms a rock song is usually played in 4/4 time. If you can clap in the two and the four then it most likely has a rock beat- However, this can also be a characteristic of Jazz or R&B.

A band I had the pleasure of listening to on Friday night was definitely a good rock and roll band. The band is composed of Chase Simpson, Josh Jove, Sebastian Harris, and Jacob Pillot. They were probably on of my favorite bands of the entire night. They had amazing instrumentals- it was so refreshing to see a band make use of guitar solos, actual drum tracks and, heavy bass lines. I loved their energy. They sound like a rock band in the 70’s that is how good they are. You can hear a little bit of folk in their music as well. I was so impressed by the way the played, that me being the photographer that I am, asked them if I could be their tour photographer! Really a band you should check out. They sang songs of their new self entitled album The Shelters. Songs such as “Rebel Heart, Lying, and Birdwatching.” The crowd was very much into the vibe of their music. I saw some headbangers from the corner of my eye. It is nice to see people enjoy raw quality music. Where the band is actually playing their own instruments. I like more stripped down shows. Where the music is clearly the focus point. That is the type of performance they delivered.  I knew the moment I heard their song that they were true rock and roll souls. Check out their new album out now!
