Indie-rock band Mondo Cozmo kicked off their first show of 2018 at Napa’s Jam Cellar with a performance that left audience and band alike in all smiles. Lead singer and band founder Josh Ostrander charmed the audience almost instantly, joking about the fact that he was drinking Corona at a wine festival, leading to several audience members bringing him glasses of wine from the bar. The less-than-formal setting of the night suited the performance well, as Ostrander continued to joke with the audience. When band member Drew Beck sheepishly walked towards the middle of the stage, Ostrander teased that Beck had forgotten his setlist, and that “he’s cheating off of mine.” Throughout the set, each song was imbued with the passion Mondo Cozmo is known for. From the delicate cover of “California Stars” to the rousing “Shine”, Ostrander and his band brought an infectious intensity to the performance. By the final song, the emotional “Plastic Soul”, the audience was frenetic in its enthusiasm and warmth to the band. And judging on the wide smiles of Mondo Cozmo’s members, the feeling was mutual.
