Mountebank @ Dan’s SilverLeaf – Denton, TX (Support: AlexAlco, Samus David Jr. & Doma Kid)

Mountebank had quite a rough start to the month of December, during their Fall 2019 tour. Originally, their Denton show on December 1 was arranged to be played at Backyard on the Bell. But the venue closed four days before they were set to arrive in town. Thankfully, they were able to tag onto a show with Samus David Jr. and that show is what we are going to be discussing. Starting now.

The show started off strong with AlexAlco. His performance was captivating, not only because of his multi-instrumental capabilities, but his ever so intriguing wardrobe choice. A woven, multi-colored sweater with a sizable hood that stood straight up like an antenna. His set consisted of showcasing his instrumental abilities with guitar, bongos, windchimes and a traditional drum kit to create Latin inspired, psych-rock. He even took a break to give his family a shout out when they arrived at the show. A sweet gesture that the crowd loved.

Samus David Jr. did not allow the momentum to slow down. They had a high energy set that seemed to put everyone in a positive mood. Bassist, Sean Kennedy could not contain his joy and that energy quickly rubbed off on the crowd. Soon enough everyone was bopping along to the tunes and it was quite an enjoyable experience.

Nothing says December better than holiday sweaters and winter hats. Doma Kid stuck with this theme for their set and it really put everyone in quite the holiday spirit. They performed songs from their album, 20XX, as well as having some genuine band interactions. “Little Johnny” and “Seatbelts” were two songs they performed, which are total crowd pleasers. To everyone’s surprise, they ended their set with a new song which required the lead singer, Sam Decker, to put down his guitar.  He hopped off stage and encouraged the crowd to dance along to the final song. We love crowd participation.

The Austin, Texas trio came prepared to show Denton what they were all about. Some light-hearted chatter was exchanged between lead singer Michael Valle and the crowd in the form of an ice breaker before diving into their set. One song that was quite a crowd pleaser was “Old Weed”. I must say that one made me chuckle and was quite enjoyable to watch them perform. Midway through the show, Michael decided to show off his mad skills by playing his guitar behind his back! Pretty incredible to watch. Mountebank knows how to put on a show and they better be coming back to Denton soon.
