Music, Why Not!

New Dose of Music- Melanie Martinez

From a young age, Melanie Martinez had wanted to be a singer. She grew up listening from modern pop stars like Britney Spears, Shakira, and Christina Aguilera to older artists like Tupac, Biggie Smalls, and the Beatles. In school, she used photography, painting, and poetry to express herself emotionally. Because of this, she acquired the nickname “cry baby,” an inspiration for her first song. In High School she began playing the guitar and growing more as a performer. When she performed on the Voice in 2012, she was tormented by classmates. After being eliminated in the second round, she tried again. She got callbacks and an audition for the show, ultimately getting an “I want you” from Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine, who she chose to be her coach. Eventually she was eliminated from the show, but that didn’t stop her. In 2013, she worked independently to make her single “Dollhouse.” She produced the song herself and made a professional-looking music video with no professional help – just her friends. In April of 2014, she announced her recent signing to Atlantic Records and that she would be going on tour. In May, she released her debut EP, Dollhouse. The toy inspired sounds in many songs caught the eye of FX, who used one of her songs for an American Horror Story: Freak Show preview. That single moment skyrocketed her career, making that song #9 on the Alternative Digital Songs chart. Her songs provide a dark, yet poppy vibe. You immerse yourself into a fantasy world with a maniacal theme. Even her music videos and live performances include intense physical messages, representing her overall unique and dynamic theme.
