New music alert! Last week, The xx released “Say Something Loving,” the second lead single off their new album I See You, set to drop this Friday. The third full album from the group, I See You is a welcome release for fans, who have been anxious for new music since their last album, Coexist, debuted in 2012. The trio out of London brought their self-titled first album to the indie pop/electronic scene in 2009, following four years of formation and establishing the band. Their first album received universal acclaim, ranking at number nine on Rolling Stone’s best albums and number two on the NME’s top albums of 2009. The trio—made up of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith—have hit it big in the festival circuit as well, playing gigs at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, among others. Their music has found widespread use in media, television, and movies alike, as well as samplings by other artists. Their track “Intro” was sampled on Rihanna’s “Drunk In Love” from Talk That Talk, and Coexist’s lead single “Angel” was mixed and sampled on Bastille’s second EP track “No Angels.” The new album’s first single, “On Hold,” was announced in conjunction with the album release date in November 2016, and the group have since appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform the single along with other album song “I Dare You.” The band considers many artists to be great influences, citing themselves as “a huge melting pot of different stuff.” Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division, Aaliyah, and The Cure all make up some of the eclectic musical groups that inspire the trio. Drifting more toward ballad-like vocals and less minimalism than previous singles and albums—Coexist was one of the best synth/minimalist albums to come out of 2012—this single gives a more genuine look into The xx’s lyrical style and a possible shift in overall musical styling. Whatever the change may be, we’re definitely here for it.
