You know those five second feelings you get after a break up. The emotions rushing up and down at the speed of light. You loose all grasp of coherency- letting the feelings that are present in that exact moment take over who you are. Those feelings eventually die down in a matter of seconds. The aftermath is still there, but it is no where near as fiery. You take those feelings and talk about them with your mates- which sort of helps you get over it or you run to your favorite “rage” album and blast that until your ear hurts- and just let it all out.
Well, a musician (artist) takes those feelings and writes a song about them. They do not let those feelings go. They kind of bottle them up and smash them into a song. You see, music is therapeutic. I always say it is the best way to know a musician because it is “The Person.” A good written song (and I don not mean grammar and shit). I mean a song written from the heart. A song written from moments in life whether they are fucking sad or extremely exciting. A song written from a person to other people- Is a song worth listening to and those songs are the ones we usually go back in our human times of utter despair or happiness. They are the songs that at the end of the day (just like people) are always there for you. Sometimes, those impact us so much that they become part of who we are. If you think about it you are kind of part of your favorite song- fucking weird.. I know.. I know.. That is the great thing about music tho, It takes you on a journey and helps you get over whatever it is you cannot handle. It never asks for anything in return, and no matter how much time passes by it will always be there. Good music is timeless- It does not need all those fancy arrangements: all the back up dancers and fluff because it speaks for itself. That raw piece of art that houses a memory that shaped the life of someone is truly especial, and yes it is hard to find. Not every artist will let you in to their person lives directly- which is very much respectable, but the secret is they will give you the key to their hearts with their songs.
This new band one of my friends told me about. Did that for me. Their sound is mysterious and dark. The instrumentals are like the peak of a thunder storm, and the lyrics are the calm hidden by that. The Night Riots is what they go by. Humble and most of all talented bunch of lads. I got to talk to them about their sound and approach to writing songs. I also saw them live and let me just tell you, I felt like I was listening to a band in the post- punk rock era back in the 70’s…. I was born in 95′ that is a tough thing to do. Music is also great because as I just mentioned and you have probably gone through this your self. Through a good tune you can travel time. It is crazy, but that is what is so captivating about bands like the Night Riots.
