Romy transformed the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles into Club Mid Air for a night of good music and dancing. Romy Madley Croft, known as Romy, released her solo album Mid Air this year and is on tour worldwide. Her music has continued to evolve and gained more and more recognition as a solo artist. She is well known from the band xx and for writing and producing music with the incredible artist Fred again… We were all so excited to hear her announcement of her tour.

I’ve attended the El Rey Theatre for concerts and I had never seen it transform the way it did for Romy. The venue was set up to make it feel like a more intimate club space. The DJ booth was off the stage and to the side of the venue while bright colorful lights strobed giving the space a rave-like feel. The crowd was full of good vibes jamming along to the music. The opening DJs, Saturn Rising, and Kim Ann Foxman, were amazing starting the night with infectious beats. As the opener’s set headed towards the end, Romy comes out to cheer them on and dance alongside them showing her support and love.

As it came time for Romy’s show, she headed straight to the stage from the DJ booth. Fans cheered in excitement as they drew their attention to the stage before them. On Romy’s side playing the live music is Francine Perry who does an excellent job playing throughout the whole show. Romy began the night with her songs ‘Weightless’ and ‘Lifetime’. As soon as her music plays, the atmosphere feels euphoric. You can hear everyone singing along as the beats flow through the space and get everyone moving. It is truly a gift to hear Romy’s vocals live. Having been a fan of her solo music and tracks with Fred again… it is so exciting to see her shine on stage.

A very memorable part of the night was when the audio unexpectedly dropped while Romy sang her song ‘Enjoy Your Life’. Her fans carried the rest of the song singing along as soon as the music was cut. A mishap was turned into a special moment for Romy and her fans. ‘Enjoy Your Life’ was playing when it happened and that is precisely what was happening at that moment: we were all enjoying life. It was quite a testament to the song.

Romy closed out the night with her beloved song made with Fred again…, ‘Strong’. This song is one of my all-time favorite songs. Hearing Romy perform it live was a special experience for us fans as it is rare to catch a live performance. The floor was full of emotions and dancing combined. The room was full of positivity, love, and support for one another. That’s what’s so wonderful about Romy’s music, it brings people together and lifts our spirits.
