From dreamo (dreamy emo) to surf rock, the members of Turnover have rebranded themselves into an outfit with bouncy bass lines and jazzy undertones. It seems as though Turnover have been reinventing themselves since their 2015 release, Peripheral Vision, a lyrically honest and twinkly full length. Celebrating their crossover into a genre with just as much honesty, but softer melodies, the band are on tour with their November release,Altogether. The Virginia-bred collective stopped by the Majestic Theatre in Detroit on December 7th.
Taking a step away from the guitar the group’s vocalist, Austin Getz, tries his hand at the keyboard while the addition of another guitarist brings the previous foursome up to a five-piece ensemble. Songs from the most recent album opened the show accompanying a mystical light show created by haze and magenta hues. The inclusion of the keyboard into the live show added another dimension to the performance’s sonic texture. Introducing themselves to the crowd for the first time that night, Turnover opened with “Still in Motion,” a song you sing in your car while driving down the highway with the windows down.
Living up to Peripheral Vision, the album that many refer to as being their best, the band’s fourth studio release includes new elements that propel them away from the sounds of the past. It was a pleasure to be in the room hearing old favorites and new obsessions like “Take My Head” and “Sending Me Right Back”. Altogether moves in a new direction from the 2017 release, Good Nature, which houses setlist songs such as “Pure Devotion” and summer-y pop bop, “Sunshine Type”. It was evident from Saturday’s performance that the band are headed in a soulful, hopeful direction.
Circling back to completion, Turnover finished the set with one of three last songs, “Plant Sugar,” a personal standout track from Altogether.The band closed the shimmery show with “Humming,” the emotionally authentic melody about wanting someone to share the positivity inside of them. Once the 15-song concert settled, everyone returned from their daydreams inflicted by the genre hopping creative outlet known as Turnover. It was a night full of dancing, singing, and passion surrounding a group who’s musical future is unpredictable in the best way.
