Wednesday strolled through the Teragram Ballroom in LA on last Friday and delivered on the promise of their recent album Rat Saw God.
The four piece group is made up of Karly Hartzman, Jake Lenderman, Xandy Chelmis, and Alan Miller. You may recognize Lenderman’s name – he’s the group’s guitarist and is building a name for himself outside of Wednesday with his excellent solo work. Here, though, he showcased his excellent and often brutal guitar work via Wednesday’s intense garage rock.
Just a month ago, Wednesday released Rat Saw God. It’s received stellar reviews and a largely sold-out tour has followed the acclaim. Most of their set understandably came from the recent release, opening with the flash in a pan “Hot Rotten Grass Smell” and closing with the epic, emotionally draining “Bull Believer”. Peppered throughout were tracks from I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone, Twin Plagues, and a cover.
Hartzman’s vocal range, emotive delivery, and commitment to laying it all out there was apparent from song one. Her voice effortlessly soared through the venue, ranging from vulnerability to raw power. It took a bit for the crowd to really get going, but about 75% through the set, a mosh pit started and kept growing, and growing, and growing until it climaxed on the final track.
Wednesday has a massive tour ahead of them (praying for Hartzman’s voice as a I type this). For a full list of tour dates and all things Wednesday, follow the link here.
