The more I listen to the radio the more I wonder how much is too much production of a song. If you think about the golden ages of rock and roll everything was so simple. Music was raw and true. A majority of the work put into the song to make an electrifying tune came directly from the artist. There was limited manipulation and that is how music came out to be so original. There was no bullshitting around the truth- either you were good or you sucked.
I guess what I am getting at is that the music today has changed so much, not only in the process of making it, but also the quality of the craft live has downgraded. Sure, songs on the radio sound amazing because they go through so much to get like that. Mixing, adding beats, layering, changing pitch and to me the worst of them all- digitizing instruments. Listen to the drum tracks in the songs being produced today (most are the same) all quantized and digitized. I guess I’m just old fashion, but if you ask me- I like the sound of real drums. All the bullshit is un-necessary- pure raw music is what is needed. The problem here is not the lack of talented guitar players, drummers, vocalist, song writers, bassist, etc. It is the lack of trust from big corporations to let the music speak for itself. Most bands “mainstream” are pre-produced. Sent away to the island of re-imaging artist; where they are thought how to dress, how to act, what to sing, all based on what sells in our generation. Is this fair to sell this type of music to the public? Where is the honesty in songs? If this is the generation of the open minded then why are we allowing corporations to mass produce music? Why are we allowing them to sell us garbage? All based on looks selling out, and toping charts, but where is the music? I’ll tell you where I think it is. It is stuck in pubs, bars whatever you want to call them, waiting to see the light of day. So many amazing bands are out there but they aren’t pretty enough for us to give them a chance.
There is too much outside the box if you ask. Every sound has to be so unique now a days that they all eventually start sounding the same. Those simple rock and roll band that worked their asses off- touring endlessly around the country- with literally nothing but their band mates, instruments, and hopes of becoming the next Oasis are out there. Now it is just harder to make it because of all the bands that buy their way into success. Now, a day’s bands (30 year old’s) that end up looking like they are 17 sell out arenas because of their looks- mostly rich with nothing but a big ego. So what is the truth behind the music of today? That we have forgotten about the music.
