Why It is hard to be a musician

For me the hardest part of being a writer has always been the beginning of my article. You sit and stare at the screen in front of you, hoping the right words will come to you. But this time it’s different, it’s not a lack of words that has me sitting here wondering what my first sentence should be. It is the incredible amount of words that come rushing to my head when I think about musicians. There just always seems to be a kind of magic about them. Whether they play rock, flamenco, R&B or whatever toots your horn, good musicians always find the key to our souls.

But what is it that turns a musician into the gatekeeper of our inner world? (Many times a world we didn’t even know existed). It’s the struggle. To say that the life of a musician is hard is a huge understatement. Among the many struggles they have to overcome are the rejection of the public, the judgment of their work, many times a non- existent salary, and the stigma that society has placed upon the idea of creating a career out of music. However, great musicians have ability to rejoice in these struggles, and many times pain, and pull from them to create something that rocks us to our core. And the reason why their music rocks us to our core, even if it does not relate to our current situations, is because it’s pure, it comes from within.

And don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that all musicians can make us feel their music, but the ones that can is because their sweat and tears are the notes to their songs. We live in a world that’s often unkind to the new and the different, but it’s those that take the challenge and run with it that deserve the spotlight and the attention of the rest.
