Wolf Alice and The Big Pink @ Ace of Spades – Sacramento, CA

WA2

British alternative rockers Wolf Alice stopped by Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California this weekend for a rousing set on the second stop of their 2018 US tour. The group, armed with a distinct style somewhere between indie and grunge, and an air of effortless confidence, commanded the stage and engaged the audience throughout the night. Lead singer Ellie Roswell deftly navigated the wide range of songs in the band’s repertoire, showing the maturity and skill to handle the ethereal belts of “Don’t Delete the Kisses” and punk screams of “Yuk Foo”, showing the restraint to be intense without losing control. Guitarist Joff Oddie, bassist Theo Ellis, and drummer Joel Amey infused the set with sustained energy, matching and reciprocating Roswell’s passion. The crowd responded in kind, jumping and singing along with the band for the entirety of the night.

Opening for Wolf Alice was British rock band The Big Pink. Performing the set under a thick blanket of swirling smoke, the three-piece established a creeping, haunting atmosphere from the start. Performing with fierce yet controlled energy, The Big Pink were able to easily engage the crowd. The set, though short, was dynamic and impressive, leaving a crowd that was both impressed and wanting more.
