UK Artist, YUNGBLUD, Nearly Arrested on SMU Campus after Surprise Show!

On Wednesday afternoon in Fondren Library, UK artist, Yungblud, took over the SMU Campus in Dallas, TX. In true rock and roll fashion, dressed in all black, the Northern Englander rushed the quiet study space and did a surprise pop-up show with the only amp being a bright pink megaphone. The group of musicians was met with confused stares, some laughs, and lots of iPhones immediately on the scene. After finishing up the song, he ran down the staircase yelling “Rock and Roll is NOT dead!”

Once outside the group thought they were in the clear, but the faculty on the scene had other ideas. One woman took it upon herself to call the cops and as they ran to their van, near a clean escape, they were stopped by SMU Police. They were removed from the vehicle and immediately questioned. After examining their IDs, passports, and learning the group was on tour from the UK, the campus police simply let them off with a warning. As I later learned, the police officer used to work in nightclubs and constantly worked around young, rebellious artists, so he was simply amused by the pop-up show.

The entire event was in hopes of promoting their show following that night at Granada Theater as direct support for K.Flay. Well, mission accomplished! As the group was being questioned, a small group formed on a nearby sidewalk and as Yungblud was entering their van to leave the premises, the group of students asked about the band and were all invited to the show. While it wasn’t the most conventional strategy for promoting, it was definitely effective.

Yungblud, also known as 19-year-old Dominic Harrison, has taken the alternative scene by storm. The Doncaster native released his first EP in January and has already attracted over 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Dominic is often described as an artist who fuses the obvious lyrical angst and vibe of alternative artists, pulling major inspiration from Arctic Monkeys and Jamie T, but also includes a slight touch of hip-hop and ska music influence.

After finishing off their tour with K.Flay on the 30th of March in Houston, it’s back to the UK to play upcoming festivals and shows. You can catch Yungblud at such festivals as Live at Leeds and London Calling. Head over to their website for all of their upcoming dates: https:/ /www.yungbludofficial.com/
