Tycho, the solo project of Scott Hansen, played The Wiltern in LA on Monday night just a few days after releasing two new songs from a rumored upcoming album. Tycho’s brand of music – downbeat, chill electronic/ambient rock – has been growing in popularity for some time now. It’s a type of music seemingly appropriate for any occasion and the diverse crowd at the Koreatown venue reflected that. Mild Minds opened the evening with a DJ set that acted as a nice mood setter for the headlining act.
Tycho took the stage at roughly 9:15 and kicked off the set with “Montana”, a highlight off of his 2014 album Awake.Behind Hansen and his band was an enormous backdrop displaying various ethereal nature settings. Waterfalls, wooded areas, gorgeous cliffs; it was like an episode of Planet Earth was being played behind the band. This complemented the deliberate and hazy pace of the music Tycho offers beautifully. Later in the set, Hansen ran through a number of his tracks off of his 2019 album Weather. This album was a left turn for many fans as it contained lyrical contributions to the tried to true instrumental package Tycho always offers. The vocalist from the album, Saint Sinner, did an admirable job, however, and actually added some nice variety to the set.
For the encore, Tycho played his biggest hit “Awake” to a crowd soaking up every bit of the soundscape. Tycho continues his tour in Europe later this month and returns to the US in May.
